Tom's Books

Tom's first book, Becoming A Multiple Intelligences School documents the process of introducing the theory of Multiple Intelligences into curriculum and instruction, and offers insights and advice to school teachers and administrators who seek to educate children using their many different “intelligences.” Tom has traveled extensively – to England, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Denmark, Chile, Argentina, Hong Kong, New Zealand and throughout the United States to lecture and conduct workshops on using the Multiple Intelligences as a tool for teaching and learning.

School Leadership For The Future, Tom’s third book, will be published by NAIS (the National Association of Independent Schools) in early 2009. In this book, Tom continues to look at leadership as a two-way interaction, a dynamic. He also has chapters on governance, diversity, development, marketing and admissions, teacher growth and development, and school culture. The foreword to the book was written by Pat Bassett, the President of NAIS.

Tom's second book, The Art of School Leadership, released in December of 2005, is one of very few books written about school leadership by a school leader. Most are written by academicians who study school leadership, not those who practice it. In his foreward to The Art of School Leadership, Roland Barth (founder of the Principals’ Center at Harvard University and author of several books including Improving Schools from Within), writes: “Tom Hoerr, after nearly three decades, is still dedicated, energized, hopeful...and learning. What he has learned and continues to learn constitutes a compendium of refreshingly different ways of thinking about school and about how to lead adults and students in the service of the central purposes of the school.”
